1,000 guns, baltimore police have removed that number from city streets. >> what is the next step to cutting violent crime. hello, again. i'm jessica kartalija. >> i'm don scott. >> here's what people are talking about today, the commissioner and mayor announced the milestone at the crime scene last night. just hours later more gunfire rang out in several neighborhoods. wjz is live. mike hellgren break s down the significant statistic and what it means. >> reporter: there's been a lot of stories involving gun violence, gangs and drugs the number of murders that has surpassed that. the mayor and commissioner wanted to make note of this milestone. >> this is the 1000th gun police took off baltimore city

streets this year. they got it in park heights after a man broke into a home with children inside. with significance to city leaders who held a conference on manchester street is few hours later. the commissioner credited a new foot patrol program. >> the moment when someone broke into the house and violated their home and it was a good thing our officers were here. >> the commissioner noted a spike in violent crime including a number of shooting in the green mount corridor. oscar cobs put the 1000th into perspective. >> it's a milestone but i say there's still too many guns in baltimore city. >> this is not a celebration. this is a call for further action. we are again relentless in our pursuit to make sure that every neighborhood in our city is a safer neighborhood and that baltimore becomes one of the safetiest big cities in the country. >> underscoring the battle

police face, less than 12 hours later police responded to four more shootings city wide. >> reporter: the victims in those shootings are young, 22 23 24 years old. police will continue those foot patrols. there will be officers in baltimore tonight. >> thank you. police arrest eded 19-year-old quinn holmes in that 1000th gun arrest. they say he assaulted the homeowner when she tried to get him to leave. a man is dead two firefighters injured after a an over night house fire in northern baltimore county. the blaze broke out just about midnight at jacksonville. an elderly man who has not been identified was found dead inside the house after the flames were contained. the two firefighters have some sort of minor injuries. how it all started still hasn't been determined. new information this noon on the shooting inside saint joseph medical center in towson. a warrant was just issued for

30-year-old bryan dargin. he will be charged with attempted murder. he was being treated at the hospital when he got into a struggle with an officer guarding him. during the struggle the officers weapon went off, grazing the officer in the leg. she did not need medical treatment. he remains in custody. starting today same sex couples seeking to mary in maryland can apply for a license to do so. alex is in the news room with details. >> reporter: good afternoon. same sex cup ouples can begin getting marriage licenses today but they won't go into effect until january 1st. maryland voters approved same sex marge last month. the attorney general wrote in a legal opinion last week that the signing will officially enable couples to get a marriage license. baltimore city and montgomery county are allowing same sex couples to get marriage licenses today but county clerks in other jurisdictions can choose to wait until the 1st of the year to

issue those licenses. >> it's not just maryland that issued them. in washington state, which had a battle referendum similar to ours, one couple got theirs this morning just hours after the same sex marriage law became legal out there. they've been together for 35 years. president obama is heading to virginia today to meet with a middle class family that will feel the impact if the country goes over the fiscal cliff. on capitol hill lawmakers are talking about the consequences of taxes going up. danielle nottingham has the latest for wjz from washington. >> lawmakers are getting an earful about why they need to avoid the fiscal cliff. >> you have to nail this down. uncertainty you is -- is killing us. >> top economists came to talk about it. president obama and john boehner spoke wednesday but publicly are holding firm on their positions. the white house has made clear the country could go over the cliff if

republicans refuse to raise taxes on the top 2% of american earners. republican leaders say they will close loopholes and eliminate tax breaks to raise money but insist that bush era tax cuts must be extended for all americans. the stan stand -- stand off and the debt concerns ryan skenke. he's the guidancing with the cochair of the president's deficit commission alan simpson. the group is working to get young people involved in fixing the debt crisis. >> we're trying to connect with our generation in a different way. we're using humor to hook them in and get them to learn about this issue and understand how it effects their lives. >> they want to sign up more than 2 million people to put pressure on both sides. in washington danielle noting ham wjz eyewitness news. >> former senator allen simple

-- simpson said the deal must include new revenue and spending cuts. he called it stupidity to speculate on which party has more to lose. across the pond in london the duchess of cambridge was discharged from the hospital this morning. she is pregnant and was hospitalized because she's been experiencing acute morning sickness. she was smiling this morning. kate is now back home in the palace for some more rest and said she's feeling much better. she said to not be yet 12 weeks pregnant and no due date has been announced. cooler temperatures are making their way back into our area. taking a live look outside. another sunny day with some clouds hanging around. will it get cooler through out the day? meteorologist tim williams is in the first warning weather center with the latest. >> good afternoon. funny that you ask. yesterday we did start at our warmest temperatures just after midnight and it did get cooler. today, things have --

the ship has road . temperatures are in the 30s. 38 bwi 39 elkin, 36 hagerstown, 32 oak land 41 in dc and ocean city. this time yesterday we were much milder 15 degrees so. temperatures were dropping through the day. we were closer to about 50 across the area and temperatures were going down. things are going to level out. we will stay in the 40s. we do have some rain that's moving into the region by probably tomorrow evening clouds will increase tonight and into tomorrow. what that's going to mean for us is that heading into friday that low moves across the region and brings the rain but also milder temperatures that low pressure system is going to bring in warmer air from the south. how does it play out into our weekend ahead? that answer in your complete first warning weather forecast. howard county executive and self-proclaimed die hard raven fan ken olmon is issuing a

in egypt clashes continue. supporters of president mohammed morsi battled off protestors. five people are dead, over 400 hurt. the demonstrations began over morsi's declaration that he should be given near absolute power. recreational marijuana is officially legal under washington state law and marijuana smokers are over joyed. at midnight there was a celebration at the seattle space needle. pot spokeers lit up as the new law took effect. the measure makes it legal to carry up to an announce of marijuana. supporters say they couldn't be happier. >> it's amazing. i'm not a criminal anymore. i can't go to jail for small amounts of marijuana. i'm free to be free. >> marijuana remains illegal under federal law though. that means federal agents can still arrest people for it and it's banned from federal property. do you mind fresh pizza attractive or think others

welcome back. as we take a look at a sunny but chilly day. our average high now is 48 degrees. our average over night low is 31. when you look at these temperatures and you think it feels very chilly, it's only chilly in comparison to the 70 degrees that we had starting off the week. it's still on the cool side. right now 38 degrees with the dew point at 20. the air is pretty dry. relative humidity now at 37%. winds are calm. around the state

temperatures ranging from about the upper 30s as you see in oakland and at bwi hagerstown also at 36, to about the low 40s, 43 easton, 41 ocean city, elkin and also in dc, 40 out in cumberland 38 columbia, 40 annapolis and kent island, 39 rock hall and in westminster and bel air. winds are calm. a bit of a southern component in hagerstown. a bit of a northern component towards the river. we will call it variable winds. it is a light breeze. what we've been experiencing over the majority of the day and over the majority of the area is high pressure pushing a nice chilly northwest wind around much of the area. it's responsible for much of the drying. what we're watching this low pressure system and the front associated with it. currently it's over the plain states and moving into the midwest. the low pressure is the counter clock wise flow around that low that's going to
